Chemical Reactions

This week were doing chemical reactions. First we put steel wool over fire and it burned and broke away. That was a single decomposition. We also put a steel nail into a cup of copper chloride and the nail turned a reddish color. Some of the stuff we did was pretty cool. I really enjoyed doing these hands on experiments.

Salt & sugar lab

This week, we did a lab which involved salt, sugar, and fire. First we would get some sugar and salt and put them in separate cups. We then got test tubes to put the sugar in. We then put the test tube over the Bunsen burner with the sugar in it. The sugar melted and turned into a dark liquid. We then put salt into a test tube and then put that over the fire, and nothing happened. So it explains that sugar can be melted and salt cannot.

Periodic table graph trend

Lately we have been learning about the periodic table. This week we were to plot the periodic table on a line graph. There are a few periodic groups and every one have a certain level if we were to line graph it. When I observe the graph we made, i see that the line on the graph is constantly going up and down the graph. The lowest level on the graph is 60, and there are 38 dots on the graph representing the substances that are on the periodic table. The reason why the trend of the graph is so wild is because it changes so frequently because of the electron affinity, ionization energy, atomic radius,and ionic radius. That is why each group is so different on the graph.

Flame Lab

This week our class did an interesting lab which involved fire and some substances from the periodic table. The question was, what color or affect would the substance do when put over the Bunsen burner. For example,when strontium was put over the fire it made the flame turn red. One substance made the fire turn green but unfortunately I couldn't recall what it was. All the substances will make a different color. They use them in fire works. I found that really interesting because i did not know that. I really enjoyed this lab

Law of conservation and mass

This week we did a lab that involved using many different chemical and masses. We used a mass measuring box to measure the mass of the chemicals in the tubes. We used the tubes to mix the chemicals inside. First we would weigh the substances individually and then after we mix, then we measure the mass of the combined chemicals. Sometimes it would make quite a diffidence but sometime it wont. One of the chemical we tried was a water bottle and these tablets which make a gas. First we measure the tablet in the cap of the water bottle. Then we put the tablet in, and sealed the bottle. The gas that was being made, was making the water bottle full of gas. I was afraid it would pop but it didn't.

Reflection on big bang theory

The big bang theory is what happend billions of years ago which made all planets and stars in our solarsystem. Its the event that started life on our planet. Some stars are bigger than ever but the ones that starts solar systems are the big ones. Most of the stars made were small but the big ones have a gravitational pull. That is how planets go around the sun in a circle.

The big bang formed giant rocks, astroids, moons, and planets. The astroids are not big enough to grasp the gravity from the sun so they normally just float around in space. Our planet is the only planet that can contain life in our solarsystem as far as we know. The light from the sun is the source of life in the planet. The first kind of life that was made was many plants and dinosaurs. Sadly the dinosaurs became extinct from a giant astroid that worked as a nuke to kill all the dinosaurs but its also a good thing because our species then came along, and also many mamals.

Scientific observations

This week we did a science lab which involved chemicals and such. First we had to fill a beaker with 150mg of water. We then took the temp of the water. It was 20. We then put some copper chloride in the water. The chloride is a green crystal like dust. It turned blue when we stirred it  in the water. As we stirred the water it would dissolve. We took the temp and it went to 18 1/2 degrees. So it went down 1 /12 degrees. At this point the blue liquid is all dissolved and blurry. We then put a small strip of tin foil in the liquid. The foil started to decompose and turn a rust  color. We started to stir the tin vigorously and it then was completely decomposed. The water was then a reddish gray. We then filtered the water into a flash and only the water went into the flash. When  it was done filtering I took the leftover residue from the from the foil and put  it in a test tube. We then  put
acid in the test tube with the residue. As we examine, it turns a light blue again and starts bubbling. The test tube was also warm. I thought this was a fun experiment

Oreo Cookie Lab

This week we have done an Oreo lab. The assignment was to find the mass of the filling in a oreo. But we had to find the mass of a normal oreo, double stuff oreo, and mega stuff oreos. The variable of this lab is the filling in the oreo. The independent variable  is three different types of oreos.

Hypothesis: I thought that the filling is just double of the previous oreo. Like mega stuff would be 2 of the double stuff.

To do this experiment I first measured the weight in grams of the first oreo. I then writ the measurement. I did it with all the oreos and each one is basically just a gram more than than previous cookie.

Results: The results are below  in grams.

             The original-1g
             Double stuff- 2.01g
             Mega Stuff- 2.99g

Conclusion: Each of the fillings are just a gram more than the filling before and my hypothesis was close but not 100% right

Stuff I learned this week in Phy Science

The first thing I leanred this week has to do with bowling balls. I thought that all bowling balls would sink but I was wrong. It all depends on how dense the bowling ball is. Bowling balls have an odd shaped weight inside that will give it momentum but not all are the same. Some are more dense than others so it means that some will sink and others will float. I enjoyed, and leanrned a lot from this lab.

The senond lab we did this week was the gummy bear lab. The question is, what would happen if we put one gummy bear in water overnight. My prediction was that it would absorb the water in the cup and it would grow a little. But unfortunatly, the heat from that day made the gummy bears disslove in the water so I am yet to find out if my prediction is right. I also enjoyed this lab, even though we didnt get results.

Why Physical Science

Why I took this course

I want to learn more about Physics and things that have to do with it. I think taking this course will help me in the future sometime like when im building something that may have physics involved. Maybe someday ill be in a life or death situation and i may need to use physics. I am also excited for all the hands on experiments that we do in class.
